"Hips Don't Lie" = iTunes #1
Well, it certainly took them long enough! Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" is *finally* available for purchase on iTunes in the USA. Apparently, in all the other international iTunes stores it was available. "Hips Don't Lie" was released Saturday and within 24 hours it was the most downloaded song on iTunes. The song's been out for months -- and there were all those "WE WANT HIPS DONT LIE AND SOS!!!11!!" iMixes on iTunes too. Rihanna's "SOS" became available a couple o'weeks ago and it shot to number 1. Once "SOS" was put up on iTunes, it also shot to number one on the Billboard Hot 100, because Billboard tracks digital music sales too. So does this mean Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" will reach number one? We'll just have to wait and see...

Shakira in trouble; "Hips Don't Lie" World Cup remix
Latin singer Shakira's in trouble for a little plagiarism present in her hit song "Hips Don't Lie." Apparently the same horn arrangement is used in Jerry Rivera's song "Amores Como El Nuestro." Rivera isn't going to press charges or anything, but he's very vocal about the fact that the music used in Shakira's song was orignally in his. Have a listen for yourself at Univision's site (click on the audio clips). Scandalous. In keeping up with the Shakira theme, she'll be performing at the World Cup next month in Germany. In lieu of this, a hot remix of "Hips Don't Lie" has been released.
Click to download "Shakira - Hips Don't Lie (Bamboo mix)" -- thanks to ATRL / Click to buy Shakira's Oral Fixation Vol. 2 album, which features "Hips Don't Lie."

Universal Settles HUGE Payola Case; "Supermassive Black Hole" f-ing rocks
We all knew that the big labels did this. It was just a matter of getting caught. Universal Music, the world's biggest music company, settled for $12 million because of "accusations that executives paid radio programmers to play songs." And not just radio -- apparently they were spamming MTV's TRL to get Lindsay Lohan's videos on. Hi-larious. Ever wonder why you never heard a Lohan song on the radio? Because radio didn't want to play it! And to get her higher up on TRL, Universal hired a "request company" to help out the video. Wow. And it doesn't stop there -- Island Def Jam (a Universal label) hired people to hype up Ludacris' "Stand Up" at radio stations in New York, and paid employees a cool extra $3,500 to hype up Ashanti's "Rain on Me." They did this for a Nick Lachey song too, back in 2004. There's a whole list of songs they did this for. For more info, check out these links: NY Times Online, E! Online, FoxNews.com.On another note, I'm in love with Muse's "Supermassive Black Hole." It's f-ing awesome. I've had it on repeat. Download it here, thanks to Stereogum.

Christina's Back to Basics; "Hands Open" is pretty cool too
Well, she certainly waited long enough, didn't she? Christina Aguilera's official website recently annouced that her new album is entitled Back to Basics and will be released on August 15th. Apparently it's a "modern take on vintage jazz, soul and blues from the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s, [and] the album is wildly inventive with a throwback style creating a sound that’s gritty and raw." Yeah, okay. Let's hope it's listenable -- and that she doesn't stretch her voice too much this time. The first single is "Ain't No Other Man," to be released June 12th and world-premiered June 8th at the MTV Movie Awards.I am loving the video for Snow Patrol's "Hands Open." The song is good, although not as good as "Run." You can buy their new album, Eyes Open, here. Check out the music video for "Hands Open":

Amy Kuney on Gilmore Girls!
Hope you all saw our featured up & coming artist Amy Kuney on last night's season finale of Gilmore Girls! She was one of the Stars Hollow "troubadour" singers, as Taylor so aptly put it on the show.In case you haven't heard Amy's great music, check out her Myspace music page @ http://www.myspace.com/amykuney.
On another note, Luke really pissed me off in that episode. And Lorelei and Christopher!!! Argh.
"SOS" rescues people from the pain of "Bad Day"
"Bad Day" was dethroned!! YES!! The new number one on the Billboard 100 is Rihanna's "SOS." This may not be the best pop song in history, but it sure is damn catchy. It's basically been stuck in my head since March. And the fact that it jumped 34...! It's gotta be the fact that kids can download it on iTunes now. I was hearing this song everywhere, my playlist, the radio, the music pumping overhead @ Wet Seal...and I couldn't figure out why it wasn't in the top 10. Guess Def Jam didn't want to release "SOS" as a single before the album, A Girl Like Me, was released. That's one hell of an annoying marketing move, let's hope it works. It was getting tiresome to see all those iMixes on iTunes with names like ***WE WANT SOS AND HIPS DONT LIE!!!11!!***. Shakira's "Hip's Don't Lie" isn't on iTunes yet. If you get the chance, buy Rihanna's album off of iTunes. It comes with three album-only remixes, and the SOS Nevin's Glam Club Mix is hot.
Who knew Brittany Murphy could sing? Check out Paul Oakenfold's "Faster Kill Pussycat." She sings lead -- and it's good dance/electronic too.
Rolling Stone's 1000th issue is out too. I finally got it in the mail yesterday. It's got everyone from Madonna to E.T. on it, in holographic 3D. In case you haven't seen this awesome cover yet, here it is (click to enlarge). Lots of "pop icons" present...
